Studio Checkup

A structural diagnostic session for creative studios

Running a studio is not the same as practising a creative activity — designing, illustrating, building installations.

At a certain point, nothing is exactly wrong, yet something isn’t working:

  • work could be steadier

  • there is no deliberate direction

  • projects arrive serendipitously

  • capacity defines ambition

  • positioning is implied rather than articulated

  • documentation lags behind output

  • pricing never feels entirely certain

  • the founder absorbs complexity by default

After years of consulting and dozens of conversations with small and mid-size creative practitioners, I developed Studio Checkup — a focused session designed to identify what is actually happening inside your practice.

No retainer.

No ongoing programme.

One contained process.

Clear outcomes.

How it works

1.

Before we meet

You receive a set of prompts to complete in advance (60–90 minutes total). These are not performance-driven MBA questions, but structured provocations designed to surface elements in your studio that usually remain implicit:

  • assumptions

  • bottlenecks

  • unspoken rules

  • pressure points

  • avoided decisions

  • contradictions

This material becomes the working ground of the session.

2.

The session (2.5 hours)

We examine the material together to:

  • identify structural tensions

  • locate root causes

  • formulate deliberate experiments

The aim is diagnosis.

Diagnosis precedes redesign.

3.

Afterward

Within five days you receive a concise document containing:

  • a structural reading of your studio

  • key contradictions or misalignments

  • priority decisions

  • suggested 30–90-day experiments

Clear enough to act on.

Compact enough to revisit.

The Method

Studio Checkup draws on a task-based methodology developed through teaching and studio practice. It uses small, concrete prompts to reveal patterns that remain invisible in ordinary conversation.

// Nothing might happen.

// Something might shift.

// You won’t know until you try.

If you suspect the issue isn’t effort but structure, this session is likely to be useful.
